Girl Up was founded by the UN Foundation in 2010 as an initiative to help support UN agencies that focus on teenage girls.  Girls   have a tremendous often untapped power to impact the world in   a   positive way. Girls Up helps   girls   access their inner power to advance the skills, right, and opportunities of girls everywhere.

Girls Up scholarship is intended to alleviate financial barriers of post-secondary education to the members of Girl Up Community   and support the success of students working to push forward gender equality. Now more than ever, they believe in the power of girls to make a difference and reduce gender gaps in fields like Storytelling, STEM, and Sports. The Girl Up award for 2021 edition will be $87,500 in scholarship to 35 recipients.

DEADLINE – MAY 17, 2021

REQUIREMENTS

This scholarship is open to any self-identified girl or woman who;

  • Is a Girl Up participant (event attendee, Club member, program participant, etc.

Enrolled in a 2years, 4years or technical college by the time of funds disbursement (high school seniors can apply)

  • Is pursuing education related to select category:
  1. Storytelling- if you are majoring in communication, creative writing, videography, graphic design, journalism or a related field OR you are using storytelling to create change in your community. Example being on your school newspaper, organizing poetry, reading, using your social media as platforms for change, etc.
  2. Sport-if you are majoring in kinesiology, sport administration and management, pre-physical therapy, physical education or a related field OR you are using sport to create change in your community. Example mentoring young female athletes, playing a collegiate sport and using your platform for social good, increasing spectators at female sporting events, etc.
  3. STEM- If you are majoring in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or a related field OR you are using STEM to create change in your community. Example: teaching younger students to code, creating a app for social good, tutoring female students in STEM, etc.

Applicants who identify as American, Black or African- American, Latin, undocumented, DACA, and/or have a disability are encouraged to apply.

Criteria

  • Demonstrated commitment to gender equity
  • Leadership potential
  • Community involvement and social activitie
  • Educational and career goals and challenges
  • Past academics performance ( e.g GPA)
  • Applicants background ( e.g. financial need ,first-gen, DACA, disabilities, etc)
  • Letter of recommendation from an instructor ,mentor, etc and not a family member
