As far as English language is concerned all over the globe, the International English Language Test System (IELTS) is accredited to be the best and most suitable test. It is generally essential for those who wish to study or work in a country where English language is the main language widely spoken. This is offered in two test layouts : Academic and General Training

You should select the Academic layout if you are planning to undertake undergraduate or postgraduate study, or you are rather seeking professional registration. It is also taken for immigration purpose to countries such as Canada, Ireland or Australia.

The test is available to up to probably four times in a month in 304 locations across 150 countries. This makes it one of the most commonly and readily available test in the world.

Test results of the IELTS are mostly reported on a band scale from 1 to 9 where 1 indicates a non-user level and 9 is an expert user. Educational institutions mostly set IELTS score requirements between 5.5 and 7.

Results of the IELTS are available within 13 working days from which the test was taken. The test center can send up to four to five original copies of your results directly to the institution receiving the result without additional charge.

Additionally, your IELTS score will also be approved by employers, professional bodies, government does Department and immigration authorities in many countries such as Canada, Ireland, UK, and New Zealand.

The the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and University of Cambridge ESOL are the three organizations conducting IELTS Examinations. The University of Cambridge is mostly responsible for the production and distributions of the examination materials.  The British Council and IDP: IELTS Australia oversee the conduct of the test. They are also responsible for administration, quality control, examination security, marketing and training of examiners and markers.

Understanding the IELTS exam format.

The basic tools you need on the examination day is your pencil, sharpener (not razor blade) and eraser. The duration of the each exam is about 2 hours and 45 minutes. As previously said,  it is divided into four section each :listening, reading, speaking and writing. Listening takes 30 minutes, reading takes 60 minutes while writing takes 60 minutes. The speaking test takes 11 to 14 minutes as well.

Listening : You will listen to four voice recording text (monologues and conversations) on different topics and in a range of accents from native speakers. Most of the recordings might tend to become difficult as the test goes on. Then, you will be given time to answer questions on recordings to display how well you have understood them.

Reading: It involve three long texts which could be descriptive, factual, conversational and analytical. The texts are credible and are extracted from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. These texts are followed by fourty (40) questions altogether to examine your comprehension the passages.

Writing: It involves two tasks.  First, a data will be given in form of a chart, graph, diagram or table, after which you will be asked to write a 150 word summary demonstrating your ability to understand the information and explain the main features. It involves mostly of description and explanation of data. You may also be asked to describe the stages of a process or how something works, or to describe an object or event. Then in the second section you will write a short essay of around 250 words responding to a statement or question. Here, you need to demonstrate your ability to construct and articulate a brief argument. It is important that you use formal languages while approaching both tasks. So try to take your time.

Speaking: There will be a face-to -face interview with an examiner. You will be examined and tested on your ability to answer questions.  You will interact with the examiner and have a lengthy talk about conversant topics. In general, the examiner will ask you questions relating to yourself, home, work, studies and interests in the first task. Then, a card will be given to you to talk about a specific topic.  You will prepare for about a minute before speaking for about two minutes. The third and the final parts involve follow up questions from part two with a more technical approach this time. Each part lasts between four and five minutes.

Some candidates will take their speaking test the same day they take the main test while some will take theirs seven days before or after the main test date. This will depend on your test center.

The Listening and Speaking tests are the same for both academic and general training types of the test. However, the Reading and Writing sections differ. If the purpose of taking the test is for admission, you will have to take the Academic type. You need to know the type of IELTS exam suitable for you while registering for the exam.
