 Are you hoping to study for free in any international university of your choice? If yes you are exactly where you should be.

There are hundreds of resources available online that offer scholarships or access to search for scholarships, but not all are legitimate.

Some are out there mostly to scam students. You need to be able to learn how to spot scholarship scams around you.

Before making attempt to apply, please check the eligibility

Your eligibility for a scholarship depends entirely on the scholarship. Some scholarships may require the student to take a language test. Some may require that you’re from a certain country and others may ask that you have a certain grade point average.

Just know that there is no generally acceptable eligibility criteria for scholarships.

Also understand how to apply Scholarship applications is mostly done online on the school’s website.

Just like eligibility, there is no set rule for scholarship application process.

Some simply require that you complete an online application form, some may ask that you submit a specially written piece of work and others may require that you belong to some particular country.

Checklist of international scholarships for Nigerian students in the USA  

 The United States of America is probably the most sought after country for international studies.

The country has many opportunities for people who are hoping to benefit from a top notch and widely recognized international education.

However, scholarship options for international students who wish to study in the US for free is largely limited.

Let’s take a look at some scholarships in America:

Fulbright student scholarship

The Fulbright program is a full scholarship in the USA meant for international students who want to pursue a Master’s or PhD degree.

The scholarship can also be awarded for non – degree postgraduate studies. The grant covers tuition fees, textbooks, airfare, a living stipend and health insurance

American University Scholarships

American University (AU) awards a limited number of generous partial merit scholarships to academically qualified incoming international first year undergraduate students.

The merit based scholarship ranges from US $6000 to $25000 per academic year

Amherst College Scholarship

Amherst College currently runs a need – based financial aid program that provides assistance to financially needy international students.

Once you get admission, your financial need is being determined.

A financial aid award that is equal to your need will then be offered. The award is sometimes called an “aid package” because it could include both self help, employment, gift aid, scholarships and grants.

Berea College Scholarships


Berea college is the only school in the United States that provides a hundred percent funding to its enrolled international students for the first year of enrollment.

This combination of scholarships and financial aid offsets the cost of tuition fees, board, room and other fees.

Although in subsequent years, international students will be required to save up to $1000 (US) per year to contribute towards their expenses.

In addition to this; the College does provide jobs to international students to enable them meet this condition

Illinois Wesleyan University Scholarships

Merit – based scholarships are offered to international qualified international applicants with outstanding academic achievement and test scores on the required entrance exams.

These awards ranges from $10,000 to $ 25,000 per year and are renewable for up to four years.

In addition, two full tuition President’s International students Scholarships may be awarded each year to qualified international students for up to four years of study

Oregon University Scholarships

The University of Oregon, each year awards more than one million dollars in financial aid and scholarships to international students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

One of their scholarship programs is the ICSP scholarship which awards thirty to forty competitive scholarships to international students each year.

Selected ICSP students receive a tuition waiver scholarship ranging from $7,500 to $30,00

 There are many international scholarships for African students available, including government scholarships, Commonwealth scholarships and university scholarships.

African London Nagasaki Fund (ALN)

Graduate scholarships for African scientists to gain funding for a master’s degree in an area related to disease control in Africa.

The scholarship winners can then choose to study at London’s Institute of Tropical Medicine, the London School of the hygiene and Tropical Medicine, or Nagasaki University in Japan.

Aga Khan Foundation Scholarship Program

This is a need – based scholarship program for African students at master’s and PhD level to study anywhere in the world.

Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships


The Commonwealth distance learning scholarship is an international scholarship for African students within the Commonwealth.  The scholarship is to study a master’s degree by distance learning from selected universities in the UK and worldwide.

British Chevening Scholarships ( UK)

Chevening scholarships is a UK government global scholarships program, and is usually awarded to outstanding students with strong leadership potential.

Awards are typically for a one – year master’s degree.

Most Chevening scholarships cover tuition fees, a living allowance at a set rate( for an individual, an economy class return airfare to the UK, with additional grants to cover essential expenditure.

Endeavor Postgraduate Awards ( AUSTRALIA)

The endeavor postgraduate awards provides full financial support for international students from around the world to pursue a postgraduate qualification at a master’s or PhD level. 

This covers either by coursework or research in any field of study in Australia.

The scholarships include tuition fees, travel allowance, establishment allowance, monthly stipends with health and travel insurance.

Swedish scholarships for international students (SWEDEN)

The Swedish Institute provides scholarships in Sweden to highly qualified international students from developing countries, who want to pursue full time master’s studies at Swedish Universities.

The scholarship will cover tuition fees, living expenses , some travel grant and health insurance

International Leader of tomorrow Award at the University of British Columbia (Canada)

University of British Columbia (UBC) provides bachelor’s scholarships for talented secondary and post – secondary international students from around the world.

International leader of tomorrow award winners receive an award level commensurate with their financial needs. This is determined by the cost of their tuition, fees and living costs minus the financial contribution the student and their family can make annually towards these costs.
