DELF and DALF French Proficiency Tests

The DELF and the DALF: Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française (DELF A1, A2, B1, and B2) and the Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française (DALF C1 and C2) are the most popular French language proficiency tests in Nigeria and also in the world. If you want to ascertain your level in French language for any reason, these examinations are for you. They are administered by the Centre International d’Étude Pédagogiques, ministère de l’éducation nationale Fancais.  The levels in the tests are described below:

 

A1- Beginner

A2- Beginner

B1- Intermediate

B2- Intermediate

C1- Advance

C2- Advance

As an international student who wants to study in French speaking tertiary institution, your minimum DELF B2 certificate will exempt you from writing an entrance examination. Irrespective of the country you may have written these tests, the standard remains the same. They are recognized internationally and are in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The exams are independent of each other, so any of the level can be attempted simply depending on the ability of the student. Each level assesses the four skills, Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. DELF also branches out into other categories such as the DEFL Pro, the DELF Prim and the DELF Scolaire.

TEST D’ÉVALUATION DE FRANÇAIS (TEF)/TEF CANADA

 Test d’Évaluation de Français (TEF) is a prestigious international test for those whose native language is not French. There are many usefulness of this test such as studying, working and immigrating to a French speaking country especially France and Canada. The TEF Canada is specifically used for immigrating and Canada citizenship purpose.

Here is the test structure:

Compulsory sections 
– Reading comprehension
– Listening comprehension
– Lexis & Structure

Optional sections
– Written production
– Oral production (conversation

 TEF Canada

The different between TEF and TEF Canada is that the TEF Canada is specifically used for immigration and Canada citizenship purpose. Also, unlike the TEF test structure highlighted above, there is no lexis and structure in the compulsory section. The optional tests are the same.

TFI

The TFI (Test de Français International) measures French proficiency in business and academic environments and is available worldwide. The structure of the exam graduate from beginer to advance level

What is the test format?

The TFI contains two sections of 90 multiple-choice questions: listening and reading.

TCF 

The test places candidates on a six-level scale (corresponding to the six levels of the European Framework for Languages).

For students planning to apply for License 1 or Architectural Design courses in France, they would have to apply for a TCF DAP instead. The two are essentially the same and vary in level of difficulty and a moderate structural difference.

You can take this test n number of times, provided there is a gap of 60 days between two consecutive attempts. In case a student tries to write the exam from different centres between these 60 days, he can be disqualified. Hence, it is always advisable for you to take the first attempt well in advance of the application deadline or beginning of the course (whichever required by the university) so that in case you don’t clear in the first attempt, you still have another opportunity before admission for the session closes.
